Half-Day Program to be Held January 9 on Westchester Medical Center Campus; Topic is the Diagnosis and Management of Childhood Neurological Concerns
VALHALLA, NY (January 7, 2016) – Some of the region’s brightest minds in children’s healthcare will be on the Westchester Medical Center campus this Saturday for an important symposium presented by a multidisciplinary team of advanced pediatric healthcare experts at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, the children’s hospital for New York’s Hudson Valley and Fairfield County, Connecticut.
The topic will be the diagnosis and management of common childhood neurological problems. With pediatric specialists in the areas of hematology-oncology; neurology; neuro-oncology; neuropsychology; neuroradiology; neurosurgery; psychology and speech pathology on the speaking agenda, dozens of children’s healthcare providers from across the area are expected to attend this important learning event.
The half-day program, which runs from 7:30 am –1:45 pm January 9th at the Taylor Conference Center, will provide local children’s healthcare providers with a concise overview of the neurological problems they frequently encounter in outpatient, urgent care and emergency room settings. In addition to the pediatricians that care for Hudson Valley and Fairfield County children, the goal of the symposium is to educate local primary care and family health providers, emergency room physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, neurology specialists, psychologists, and other health professionals involved on the evaluation, diagnosis and management of children with neurological disorders.
The program director is Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., Chief of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and one of the world’s foremost figures in pediatric oncology care and research. Symposium presenters, many of whom are faculty members at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), include Pediatric Neuropsychologist Suzanne Braniecki, Ph.D; Chief of Pediatric Neurology Ronald I. Jacobson, M.D.; Monica McHenry, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Associate Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at New York Medical College; Nathan E. Millard, M.D., Attending Physician in the hospital’s Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation; Director of Inpatient Neurology, Phillip Overby, M.D.; Pediatric Neurologist Wendy Silver, M.D., MA; Michael Tenner, M.D., FACR, Section Chief, Neuroradiology, Advanced Imaging Center at Westchester Medical Center and Co-Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Michal Tobias, M.D.
“Neurological disorders are some of the most complex conditions to diagnose and treat and more often than not, a pediatrician or other primary care clinician is the first to be introduced to the issue,” explained, Dr. Cairo. “With this symposium, our aim is to dispense invaluable information that will empower local children’s healthcare providers with the knowledge they need to make decisive and vital decisions for the betterment of their young patients’ health.”
Symposium participants will earn Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits. To register online and view symposium’s program schedule, qualified providers should visit www.westchestermedicalcenter.org/CMEConferences.
